Company profile
ANZ is among the top four banks in Australia, and the leading bank in the South Pacific - serving more than six million customers, and employing over 35,000 people worldwide.
ANZ provides a range of banking and financial products and services to retail, small business, corporate and institutional customers.
ANZ aims to become a super regional bank in the next five years. This involves growing its presence in the Asia Pacific region to around 20% of earnings by 2012, while also remaining focused on the existing business and opportunities across Australia and New Zealand.
The challenge
With the aim of expansion, ANZ faced the challenge of increasing its customer base without increasing its paper use, internally or externally.
'Paper-Less' strategy
ANZ set the goal of reducing its paper use by 10% over the following two-year period. ANZ decided to reduce its paper use through paperless internal processes, paperless customer communication, and smarter paper use and recycling.
'Paper-Less' solution
- ANZ no longer keeps a "file copy" as part of the mortgages application process
- a mortgage scanning process has been introduced, replacing the requirement to send faxed copies to a print server across the branch network
- ANZ has committed to paperless meetings - employees have been advised not to print meeting agenda and materials, and to use laptops and projectors where appropriate
- recycled paper has been made mandatory
- a pilot is underway testing the replacement of existing printers and photocopiers with more energy-efficient multifunction devices, which allow for double-sided printing and the canceling of print jobs
- ANZ is implementing the first stage of an initiative to provide individual customers with electronic statements for a number of its products.
'Paper-Less' results
- in 2008, ANZ achieved a 6% performance improvement in paper consumption. ANZ is on track to meet its 10% reduction target for the two-year period
- significant savings in paper use and its associated costs - a saving of 428 reams of paper each year due to no longer keeping "file copies" and a further 4.4 million pages through the mortgage scanning process
- reduced printing and photocopying units required, resulting in reduced purchase and maintenance costs, and office space needed.
